FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

or questions you SHOULD be asking your wedding photographer!

WHY DO YOU LOVE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY?

I’m passionate about meeting people, hearing their unique stories, and having the privilege to share it through the photographs I create.
Emotion drives my passion for Wedding Photography, and I feel the best images are those that tell an emotional story we can all connect to. I love the rush of a wedding day, only getting one chance at documenting history unfolding.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SHOOTING STYLE?

My style is mainly documentary and natural, with no hesitation to get down and dirty for something SPECTACULAR.
I’ll photograph your day as it unfolds, making sure not to miss the laughter, tears, awkwardness, and everything else!
When shooting the formals, my main focus is the environment in which we’re shooting, and how it is part of your story. I approach it as if shooting a landscape setting, and place my subjects into that scene very strategically. When in that scene, you’ll most likely be asked to do something, like walk, run, talk, kiss, etc., and this in turn creates a much more “interactive” and emotional image.

WHY SHOULD I HIRE A PROFESSIONAL WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER?

A professional photographer will know how to make any shot look interesting. They won’t be afraid to take risks to make an image look better than ordinary. They make sure the day runs smoothly while going above and beyond to assure you’re comfortable and taken care of.

The professional knows where to be, when to be there, and can anticipate events unfolding. We are trained to be aware of our surroundings throughout the day not to miss a moment. Lastly, you’re hiring someone who will have a variety of gear to be prepared for any situation.

WE ARE REALLY SHY IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA, CAN YOU STILL TAKE GOOD PICTURES OF US?

For sure! We’ll do our best to laugh and joke with you, keeping the mood light and the experience enjoyable. My goal is to bring your personality out and capture genuine emotion. This means shooting between the moments, and capturing the magic that happens when the walls come down.

DO YOU RECOMMEND A SECOND PHOTOGRAPHER? WHY?

Yep! While I work fast, and am aware of what’s going on the wedding day, I’m still only one person. Having another photographer on the wedding day offers double the opportunity for capturing all the craziness!

This means capturing BOTH reactions when walking down the isle. Or while one does family photos, the other is capturing candid moments happening. While at one house for getting ready photos, the other can be at the second house.

Lastly, a second photographer means a second set of cameras and lenses for an emergency backup, which luckily, I’ve never had to use 🙂

MY VENUE(S) WON'T HAVE VERY GOOD LIGHT, HOW DO YOU HANDLE THIS?

Sometimes I say no light is better than bad light. If you’re unsure about what kind of lighting you should have, feel free to ask me!

I’m always packing my own lights and using them when need be. I’ll always assess the situation and do what needs to be done to make it look pleasing. This means I’ll take the initiative and adjust the present ambient lighting to taste (if possible).

One wedding ceremony was in a church with roughly 30 light switches all controlling different nasty lights. The priest gave me full control to turn off what was unflattering, and made for better looking images!

WHAT KIND OF CAMERA GEAR DO YOU USE?

This is not as important as HOW I use the gear, but if you must know, I shall tell you!

I use two full frame cameras for the best image quality and low-light capabilities. Two bodies allows me to be much more “stealthy”. I can use a different lens on each camera to get both the wide angle and zoomed in shots.

I use a dual camera strap made by the trusty HOLD FAST GEAR. It’s been my hero in making sure I’m both functional AND fashionable while shooting your wedding. Here’s an image of the Holdfast helping me hold a Bride’s dress through the grass 🙂

HOW DO YOU MAKE SURE WE GET ALL THE SHOTS REQUIRED?

About a month or so before the day of your wedding, I’ll send out a questionnaire. The questionnaire will have various questions pertaining to your shot requirements, as well as the opportunity to provide me with “inspiration”.

DO YOU DO FAMILY PHOTOS AT THE WEDDING?

Yeah for sure. The questionnaire I send out a month before the wedding asks about the family photos required. I always recommend keeping it to a minimum and be conscious of time, as the wedding day flies by! If I notice room for improvement in your family photo requests, I’ll let you know. Also, it’s a really good idea to have a coordinator for family photos. Typically someone who knows most members on both sides of the family.

I LOVE PINTEREST, CAN WE USE IT FOR POSING IDEAS?

Sure! I’ve had Bride’s add me to their boards on Pinterest. Then we have the ideas handy on the wedding day to refer to when shooting. If no specific requests are made, I will shoot based on my documentary style.

WHEN DO I RECEIVE MY IMAGES?

You digital files will be available within 6-8 weeks after the wedding day. Longer for albums, and depending on options.

WILL YOU GIVE ME EVERY PHOTO YOU TOOK ON MY WEDDING DAY?

No. The reason is because I shoot a LOT! You don’t want every single image as most of them will be duplicates from blinks, awkwardness. Many will be out of focus, blurry, and miss-fires. I’ll take THOUSANDS of images on a day, carefully cull them down to a nice collection of images for you.

HOW MANY PHOTOS CAN I EXPECT TO RECEIVE FROM MY WEDDING DAY?

For a full wedding with one photographer, I would say you can expect 500+ images. I do not guarantee an amount.

CAN I HAVE THE RAW FILES TO EDIT MYSELF?

Sorry, no. Most people wouldn’t know what to do with a RAW file. I would hope that you’re hiring me for how I shoot and process my work. If I’m hired for shooting but no editing, we might be able to work something out!

HOW WILL MY WEDDING PHOTOS BE DELIVERED TO ME?

Depending on what’s included in the collection. A private web gallery with downloadable images is standard on all collections. My premium delivery is a custom engraved wooden print box including archival prints, and custom wooden flash drive.

DO YOU OFFER ALBUMS?

Sure do! I can show you the albums I offer, just feel free to ask.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU BECOME ILL OR DIE BEFORE MY WEDDING AND CAN'T BE THERE?

Oh boy, I do not want to think of that… 🙁
Luckily, this has not happened. I am still alive, and I have not fallen ill enough not to shoot a wedding. That being said, it can happen. That’s why my contract states that I will find a suitable replacement to photograph your wedding. If I fail to do so, all money paid will be returned in full.

DO YOU ONLY PHOTOGRAPH WEDDINGS IN MANITOBA OR ARE YOU AVAILABLE TO TRAVEL?

I’m definitely up for a trip! Contact me if you’re looking to hire me for travel.

CAN YOU HOLD A WEDDING DATE FOR ME?

If another couple inquires about the same day as you, I’ll make sure to give you first dibs. Although, a day is officially booked when the contract is signed and the non-refundable retainer is paid.

HOW FAR IN ADVANCED SHOULD I BOOK YOU FOR MY WEDDING DAY?

Sooner the better of course! I generally start booking up the fall/winter prior to the wedding season.

I WOULD LOVE TO HIRE YOU, WHAT ARE MY NEXT STEPS?

Awesoooooome!!
We should then meet in person (if we haven’t already) and get to know each other. Once you decide on the collection that’s right for you, I’ll do up a booking proposal for you. This will layout your invoices, the contract, and get you setup on an online portal. I can show you all of this when we meet up 🙂
